If you have recently gotten a family dog, there are many ways that you may need to adjust your home to accommodate them. And if your backyard is unfenced, one of those adjustments is installing a fence.
Because this is your first time installing a fence, you may not know what type of fence would be best for your home and your new four-legged family member. Get to know more about some of the fencing options available to you and how they may benefit you as a homeowner and dog owner.
Chain Link Fencing
One of the most popular fencing options in general for homeowners is chain link fencing. The reasons that chain link fencing is so popular are fairly simple. It is an inexpensive fencing material (in comparison to most other options), and it is easy to install.
If you have a small dog that is not very adept at climbing, like a Pomeranian or a Chihuahua, then a standard four-foot chain link fence may be all you need to keep your furry friend in your yard. However, for larger dogs, this may not be the best choice. A Husky or similar sized dog can easily jump a four-foot fence without much effort.
Many medium and large dogs are also talented at climbing and chain link fencing, even at five or six-foot heights, is a very climbable fencing material. Therefore, if you have larger or more agile dogs, chain link may not be the best option for you.
Wrought Iron Fencing
Wrought iron fencing is one of the most traditional and old-fashioned fencing options available on the market today. It is a somewhat glamorous fencing option with ornate designs that will give your home oldworld charm. However, this does not necessarily mean that it is the best option for your home when you have pets.
The one issue with wrought iron fences and dogs is the spacing between wrought iron bars in the fence. These gaps and open spaces can leave enough space for a slender or small dog to slip through and escape.
There is also the issue of people being able to reach in through the fence. If your dog is startled, scared, or territorial, this may result in a bite that could cause you and your dog a great deal of trouble and distress.
Wood or Vinyl Fencing
If you are looking for the best possible fence options for your dog, no matter their size or rambunctiousness, then you may want to look into one of two options; wood or vinyl fencing. Both of these fencing options offer decided advantages when it comes to keeping your dog in the yard and safe from the outside world.
Firstly, most standard wood fences and vinyl fences are about five to six-feet tall, making them more secure for larger dogs. You can even opt for higher eight and ten-foot tall wood and vinyl fencing if you have a dog that seems to have boundless springs in their legs.
Wood and vinyl fencing also offer smoother surfaces with little to know "handholds" for your dog to gain footing on to climb the fence. As such, jumping the fence or climbing the fence will not be possible. The security offered by the solid panels of wood and vinyl fencing will also prevent people from reaching hands into your yard so there will be no biting issues.
The only issue that you may have with wood or vinyl fences is digging underneath them. However, you can prevent that by pouring concrete around and under the fence or lining the fence with other stones to block your dog from burrowing under the fence.
With these fencing choices in your mind, you can better decide which option is best for you and your new canine family member.
